The Great Gatsby is an American Novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s. The story tells the life of a man named Jay Gatsby narrated by Nick Carraway, who explains Gatsby’s life through his point of view. The book was published in 1925 and since then has resulted in a number of film adaptations. The adaptations I have chosen to focus on being the 1974 version by filmmaker Jack Clayton and 2013 version by filmmaker Baz Luhrmann. Those are the two most important adaptations that have gained worldwide success. The filmmakers for both versions of the film interpreted The Great Gatsby in their own way. While watching both of the films I noticed the different interpretations of the Great filmmakers through visuals, actors, and sound.

The two characters I enjoyed watching in both films are Gatsby and Daisy. The 1974 version Gatsby and Daisy are played by Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. The 2013 versions are Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. Each actor brings a different vibe to the characters. I noticed the 2013 Gatsby was more outgoing, talkative and emotional than 1974 who was cooler, calm, and laid back. Both actors brought an interesting twist to the story. In one scene where Gatsby makes, Daisy tells Tom the truth about their relationship and how she never loved him. 2013 Gatsby is more emotional and gets angry where he almost hurt Tom. The 1974 Gatsby rarely showed any emotion throughout that scene where as Daisy was the emotional one during that scene. The 1974 version of the film is viewed as being dull and boring. Because of the emotional disconnect from Gatsby, it lacked passion between the two lovers. Clayton also had the actors put emphasis on certain words, which showed the dialogue in the movie was going to change. The actors and actresses who played in the 2013 film talked dramatic and over-the –top whereas the 1974 actors played their characters in soft-spoken voices except for daisy who would have a loud outburst in certain

Marcus Aurelius, once said that “Time is a sort of river of passive events, and strong is its current; no sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes place, and this too will be swept away.” This holds true because in the novel, The Great Gatsby, time is rapidly moving from event to event meaning that time does not stop. Throughout the novel the main protagonist ,Gatsby, does not seem to be able to catch up to the present time of the novel. F.Scott Fitzgerald, a twentieth century American writer, published the novel, The Great Gatsby, in 1925. The novel is best known as the Great American novel.…
