Some may say that “history is always bound to repeat itself” while others may argue what “past is past”. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic The Great Gatsby, Gatsby has tricked himself into thinking that he could repeat the past and regain the primordial satisfaction of being in love with Daisy, unaware of how his circumstances made his dream an impossible goal. Gatsby was unable to reach a happy ending because he could not let go of what was long gone. By chasing his dream of Daisy and trying to repeat the past in the future, Gatsby ended up destroying himself.

Fitzgerald uses his distinctive writing style, including powerful language, imagery, and symbolism to demonstrate that past events could never be completely put behind someone or repeated.

In the scene where Nick stands upon Gatsby's dock, he reflects upon the events that occurred throughout Gatsby's life. It begins with a long shot displaying in the background Gatsby large house as a gloomy, mysterious silhouette. There are no lights on in the house which demonstrates a great contrast from the vibrant parties that had occurred. The emptiness of the house shows that everyone had left Gatsby behind after he died as a result of living in the past. In the foreground is Nick stands on Gatsby's dock, in the fog and rain. The weather is used to create an atmosphere of somberness. The scene then fades into a closer view of Nick standing in the rain. He has an expression of great sadness and reflection. There is a lack of contrast and the frame is made up of muted colors. The next camera angle shows the green light shining from the fog. In front of the light appears a vision of Gatsby reaching out towards the light, so “close that he could hardly fail to grasp it”. The fog surrounding the vision of Gatsby had disappeared, and the rain had stopped. This likely was done to show that Gatsby had always had the clear goal of repeating the past with Daisy and never stopped believing that he could change the past. The final line of the novel is then overlaid on top of the view of the green light, being written by Nick as a way of trying to cope with his past with

‘You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock.’” (Page 92). At this moment, Gatsby had Daisy right next to him, which is his dream that he’s been longing for so long. The mist covers their view of the green light, which almost erases Gatsby’s symbol for his dream (it can’t be seen anymore because Gatsby finally had achieved his dream). And on the top of page 93, Gatsby seems to realize how significant the light was to him.…

Book to movie adaptations are nearly impossible to get right. Oftentimes, as I reread a book - never the first time reading, unless it’s a very dull book that allows the mind to wander - I imagine what a movie adaptation might be like.
