1922 was a series of ups and downs for Jay Gatsby. He watched as his dream became so close, he felt like he could reach out and grab it, then watched it all come quickly tumbling down. Terrible things happen in Gatsby’s life throughout The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, yet Nick Carraway states that he turned out all right in the end. This is due to keeping his hope of his dream alive even at his lowest points, and living his life as someone to be proud of.…

One who is obsessed is compulsively preoccupied beyond control with a person, object or idea. In today’s society, we see obsessions with money, certain people, activities, and statuses. Throughout F. Scott Fitzgerald 's world-renowned novel, The Great Gatsby, characters misunderstand their obsessions with materialistic and objective ownership with honest love. The plot of the novel entwines a sly play on the reality humans know with a deeper cognizant of psychological behaviour regarding love and obsession. It strikes a chord on readers’ mindsets by slightly enhancing the beliefs naturally retained.…

The role of a father in the life of a child is one of the most important aspects of everyday life. Fathers are often viewed as the most influential people during a person’s childhood, as their relationship with the person helps to mold the person for the future by imprinting their morals, ideas, culture, and more onto that person, thereby shaping their character as an adult. While the customs and cultures of humanity have changed over generations, the role of fathers in shaping these generations has not. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s acclaimed novel The Great Gatsby, the influence of fathers and father figures is prominently displayed, as the titular character of Jay Gatsby is drastically affected by the influence of his father figures in his past.…

I agree with this argument completely. This review covers how each character handles their grief. I agree that the losing of Phoebe, Norah was forever changed. An excerpt from the story states, “She kept for this knowledge and for Paul, the rage and lostness in his eyes. For her daughter, never known.. for the multitude of ways in which their love had failed them all, and they, love” (Edwards 304) Which speaks of all the different directions Norah feels pain for.…

Throughout The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway is the only point of view we are given about the lives between these characters, Fitzgerald uses Nick as a way to establish the motif of loneliness by showing that even though Gatsby has everything one wishes for during this time, he is still deep down alone because he is surrounded by fake love and care; however, Nick himself is also isolating himself the most by not being involved and only being the observer. There are many moments throughout the book where loneliness is portrayed through the characters. Beginning with Gatsby. He is a very mysterious man, who constantly throws huge parties at his mansion, with tons of people he does not know. He is surrounded by many people all the time, yet deep…

Personal response of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon This coming-of-age film is about an isolated, high school senior named Greg, who tries to blend through crowds and makes parodies of classic films with his friend Earl. Greg’s mum forces him to befriend a girl named Rachel who has been diagnosed with stage 4 leukemia. The film overall is not about cancer but explores the main themes of friendship and life itself. One of the huge themes presented in this film is the authentic friendship between Greg and Rachel, and it’s goes against cliches because they do not fall in love and love relationships are very common in films.…

Live Long and Suffer A child’s death is seen as a life cut short, a terrible tragedy, and often the failure of society. Wanting to die young is such an uncommon desire that we classify those who have this desire as suicidal or diagnose them with mental illness. Rather than focusing on how to die quickly, humans expend every effort into extending life. This desire to live is by evolutionary necessity the most important goal for any organism. Furthermore, in Never Let Me Go the desire to live longer is so powerful that people create clones in order to receive organs which will extend their lives.…
