In 2000, John D. Freyer decided to sell everything he owned on eBay® so that he could move and wrote ads or each item, and later collectively published them as a book. The unique aspect of his ads was the way he described each item, subjectively descriptive. A typical ad on eBay is objectively descriptive in an effort to accurately describe the item for a quick sale, and is completely devoid of fluff. He described each item as a vivid snippet of his own personal life and what role or memories that specific item evoked as he looked at it. He descriptively begins the ad with the line “If I hear ABC one more time I may have to take advantage of this country's ridiculous gun laws and buy myself an automatic weapon for a rampage.” The statement is very polarizing, given the current debate over gun laws, and some recent public rampages, like the one recently in a Colorado movie theater where a college student took a gun and murdered innocent people.
The statement is descriptive in the sense that I had the image of a 30 something (if he was in his 40’s or 50’s he would have used the phrase, “and go postal”) white guy, liberal with a smirk of cynicism, probably college educated, and not a blue-collar hunting type person. The eBay ads I found for the same item had either no description, or an objective description “in Clear Plastic Sleeve, played only a couple of times, as I used to tape my music to listen in the car, has not been played for many years, stored upright in correct environment.” This description only speaks to the physical condition of the
