In the film” the Great Gatsby’, Luhrmann aimed to construe the jazz age into the music equivalent to our times (the now). However, according to R. Bassil, Luhrmann failed in capturing the spirit and earnestness of Gatsby’s West Egg mansion parties and stated that it is more suitable for a twilight film or a headphone advert (Bassil, 2013). This essay will disagree with the statement made and will refer to the following three sound techniques found in the film: Diegetic, Non-diegetic and a sound bridge to support the argument.
Gatsby’s death scene contains many diegetic sounds combined for example, the splashing of water, gunshots, a butler talking, Caraway talking and Gatsby himself. These sounds are heard by various characters in the scene. Some were very loud like the gunshots and Caraway’s yelling. And some were soft like Gatsby’s whisper. We know that Wilson shot himself after he killed Gatsby, we do not see this gunshot but hear it simultaneously with the splashing of water. Through the diegetic sound we receive more information about the scene which makes it very effective (Stripek, 2014).These sounds enable the audience to connect with not only the story but with the characters and their emotions too. It enhances the scene by leaving the audience devastated while Gatsby uses his last breath to call out his beloved

Conversations could yield a level of awkwardness where everyone makes no movement or sound before carrying on their conversations; diversely, this is not the case in the novel in which the silence lasts a couple of minutes due to the shock between Gatsby and Daisy. The shock between the two characters is described in the novel when Gatsby knocks over Nick’s old clock, “Luckily the clock took this moment to tilt dangerously at the pressure of his head, whereupon he turned and caught it with trembling fingers, and set it back in place. Then he sat down, rigidly, his elbow on the arm of the sofa and his chin in his hand”(Fitzgerald 86). The clock itself played an important role as it presents how Gatsby can’t let go of Daisy and clings on to the past. Scholars that study the book have speculated that it may even foreshadow his inevitable doom for trying to relive the past.…

Auteur theory is the theory of filmmaking in which the director is regarded as the key creative force in a film. Dubbed by American film critic Andrew Sarris in France during the late 1940’s, auteur theory was an outgrowth of the cinematic theories of Andre Bazin and Alexandre Astruc. This theory states that the director, who oversees all visual and audio elements of a film, is considered somewhat of an ‘author’ of a film more so than the writer of the screenplay. This means that visual elements such as blocking lighting, camera placement and angles as well as scene length deliver the message of the film, rather than the plot. To qualify as an auteur, a director must showcase technical competence, personal style, and interior meaning.…

George Wilson pulled the trigger that ended Gatsby’s life, but all of the blame should not be placed on George. Gatsby’s death resulted from a chain of many events that all contributed to his demise. The death could be traced back to Daisy Buchanan, Myrtle Wilson, Tom Buchanan, or Gatsby himself. The main events that contributed to Gatsby’s death were Myrtle and Tom’s affair, Gatsby’s obsession and affair with Daisy, Myrtle's death, and George Wilson eventually shooting Gatsby. These events all have different causes and effects, but I believe only one person should take the responsibility for Gatsby’s death.…

Auteur, which is French for author, is a term coined by French film critics. It refers to the idea that some film directors have a certain artistic vision that always carries over into their films, and because of this, it is easier to analyze and understand their films (Pramaggiore and Wallis 451). The idea of the auteur has prevailed since the 1940s (408), and is not only specific to filmmakers who create “higher art.” The French insisted that “even Hollywood directors…could be viewed as artists” (408). One modern example of an auteur is Tim Burton.…

In Ch 9, F. Scott Fitzgerald elucidates the aftermath of Gatsby’s death, in which Nick desperately tries to gather Gatsby’s close friends for his imminent funeral. As Nick fails to find such people, Fitzgerald reveals that Gatsby, although a man of supposed stature and renown, has made no difference on anyone’s lives, dead or alive, except for Nick’s, who seems to idolize Gatsby; this is apparent as Nick seems intent on taking responsibility for Gatsby’s postmortem affairs, even though he, just like all of Gatsby’s close friends, did not know Gatsby at all, in turn showing that most everyone only feigned admiration for Gatsby, presumably for his wealth. Although he claims to scorn Gatsby, Nick works hard to ensure a proper funeral for Gatsby…
