Compare and Contrast: Novel and Movie with Analysis The Great Gatsby is set in the 1920’s, focusing on achieving the “American Dream” and the decay of it. The movie and novel are very similar to each other from the characters, the relationships, and the outrageous parties described, however, there are some major differences in both. Although, the movie gives more insight into Daisy and Gatsby’s relationship, allowing you to see most of it was in his head. Some similarities is the events with owl eyes, the significance of the green light, and Daisy and Tom’s relationship. Here is one similarity for instance: While searching for Gatsby, at his party, Jordan and Nick wandered into …show more content…
In the book Nick is outside one night and sees Gatsby at the end of his dock “...he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way…I glanced seaward-and distinguished nothing except a single green light.” (Fitzgerald 25 & 26). Later on, after talking to Jordan about what happened between Gatsby and Daisy years ago, he realizes “...it had not been merely the stars to which he had aspired on that june night.” (Fitzgerald 83) it had been Daisy, who Gatsby was reaching out to. Tom cheating on Daisy and not telling her even though she knew, shows dishonesty on Tom’s behalf and loyalty on Daisy’s half for staying with him. These are major similarities that were crucial to be remained the same in both the movie and novel, or else we would have thought that Owl Eyes was just some crazy man, the green light just an ordinary light, and Tom and Daisy’s relationship wouldn’t have showed us how powerful loyalty is; which are all major components of The Great …show more content…
It allowed me to better understand what The Great Gatsby was all about. I saw how amoral everyone could be, with Gatsby living a lie with all of his luxuries and throwing huge parties to catch Daisy’s attention, a woman that was not his. How people could be so cruel, Tom and Daisy picking up and leaving as if nothing ever happened, placing all the blame on Gatsby. I saw everyone as they were. I would change the ending in the book and replace it with the ending in the movie (the scene of Gatsby’s death). I appreciated the ending more, it was depressing but heartfelt, it gave me a new
