The Great Gatsby Chapter 1 Summary

he plot I found most crucial in chapter one was, when Nick had met the Buchanan’s, and Jordan. This plot was most important I thought because the Buchanan’s had a lot of issues, amongst themselves. Nick learned many things about the Buchanan’s such as Tom Buchanan was a cheater. Tom had another lover in New York while still in a relationship with Daisy. Tom is very neglectful towards his wife Daisy and seems not to care about her. Daisy who is Tom’s wife and Nick’s second cousin is known to be shallow. She goes as far as hoping that her daughter will grow up to be a beautiful fool, because she thinks foolish women live better. Along with the Buchanan’s, was Jordan Baker. She is a competitive golfer. Jordan did not say much at first, but soon later took a little bit of interest in Nick. Nick also took great interest in Jordan since he loved her body language, and personality. Everything about Jordan attracted him to her. Meeting …show more content…
The statement also shows that Tom wants everything his way, and will take no for an answer. Tom is very full of his self, and thinks he is very superior. Nick also states that he is a totally different person since his New Haven years. The description also reveals that Tom is not good at all for his second cousin Daisy. After all Tom is very controlling and stubborn in the text. He seems to not care about his wife Daisy for he does nothing for her but everything for the other women in New York. Nick even went as far as to think that Daisy should pick up her baby and leave. Nick stated this in this quote, “It seemed to me that the thing for Daisy to do was to rush out of the house, child in arms.” In my opinion it would be smart for Daisy to pick up and leave because Tom seems very abusive, neglectful, untrustworthy, and arrogant. From his description stated by Nick and his actions in the story, I agree with Nicks quote on leaving

At the peak of the climax, a final example of one of the litotes Fitzgerald uses can be found in chapter seven. Myrtle has been run over by the speeding yellow car and Gatsby stands idly outside the Buchanan house aware of any commotion. Nick steps around the lawn to look and views both Daisy and Tom conversing on the inside. “They weren’t happy … and yet they weren’t unhappy either,” (145) describes Nick. Though Chapter 1 finished with the secretive Gatsby connecting with his fantasy in the night, Chapter 2 opens with a striking complexity. Scratch informs us regarding an extend of land lying "about somewhere between West Egg and New York" which is desolate to the point that it is just a "valley of powder — a fabulous ranch where fiery debris develop like wheat into the edges and slopes and abnormal greenery enclosures; where slag take the types of houses . . . [and] with an extraordinary exertion, of men who move faintly and as of now disintegrating through the fine air." As the geographic midpoint between what is as a result suburbia and the city, the valley of powder, a dreamless, lackluster place bound on one side by a rotten stream, is…

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT The main character that watched all of the drama surrounding him unfold is Nick Carraway. He is a kind of simple, humble man from the Midwest that enjoys the richness of his new surroundings on Long Island at first but soon realizes that it isn’t all he thought it out to be. Nick is mostly in the background of what is happening before him but he is an integral part of the story as he retells it in a different way than how Gatsby or Tom or any other character would retell it. He is observant and somewhat unbiased as he describes the events taking place.…
