"Power, money and the American Dream. What else could I ever want?" These are the words that Gatsby from The Great Gatsby may have been thinking as he indulged in the best of the world's luxuries. In the film, he is portrayed as a Byronic Hero and Bad Boy. So, what makes him a bad role model for the younger generation of our audience? Although he is covered with the world's motivation, money, what makes him unable to be on par with Tony Stark from Iron Man and James Bond from the famous 007 Series? Recent films and blockbusters have revealed that the Byronic Hero and the Bad Boy are the best types of characteristics one should take in order to be involved in romantic relationships. Throughout the whole novel and film, Gatsby has manipulated and lied to people in order to boost his self image to everyone. A good example of his actions in this sense are when he lied to Nick about being the “good” person he was and the “things” he has done."Oh, I've been in several things," he corrected himself. "I was in the drug business and then I was in the oil business. But I'm not in either one now." (p87) But in reality, Gatsby was a bootlegger who did illegal work in order to get his hands on some money. Not an occupation to be proud of if you want to maintain self pride and the trust of others. He did not take into account the consequences that came along with lying about his true identity. But he just went blabbering on, confirming the rumours about him and building himself a fake identity without a single worry or regret in the world. Real men never lie, even about the smallest things. Does this mean that Gatsby isn’t a real man? Well, yes, if you haven’t figured that out already. He was just a fragment of what a real man is. Although he had the ability to make himself a real man by being honest with others, he decides to take the route that many incapable others would take.
