According to The New York Times Poll, Many Feel the American Dream Is Out of Reach only 64% of Americans believe in the American Dream. (Source B) Almost half of America does not even have faith in this so called dream we have been idolizing for decades, but with the economic realities of the country, how could people believe in the dream? According to source A, Walter G. Bumphus supports Obama’s proposal to provide tuition-free access to community college and this is a great idea in working to recreate the American Dream. In order to become wealthy and successful you must be born wealthy or get a college degree, but many people today cannot afford the expensive, over the top, price of college therefore they end up working a job that only pays minimum wage becoming part of the lower class. When Americans reach this point they become discouraged and are to afraid to work toward their goal of being successful. Today lower class citizens are discriminated and put down because they are not as rich as other people and cannot afford what others can, leading to a feeling of envy and doubt. In Kathleen Parker’s column for The Washington Post she stated, “As we begin yet another year, it is less easy to summon the dream. People hire others to do their job because they care about their social status. While rich people take advantage of their money, poor people are often discouraged and envious because others may have more than them. The poor believe that their is no way you can go from “rags to riches” anymore. They have no faith in themselves to work hard and accomplish their dreams. The economic state also plays a key role in the American Dream. Things cost too much and with the economy failing the American Dream is impossible. Today the American Dream is unachievable and if America does not work together to make the dream what it was initially about, the dream will never be achievable again.
