Gatsby tells everyone he was born into the wealth from his parents. In reality his parents were poor farmers who lived in the middle of nowhere, Gatsby never accepted that fact. He left home and happened to meet a sailor who was very wealthy that took him in. The man showed Gatsby the way life is and taught him to be a man. After the sailor died Gatsby lied and took over the man’s life. The only other person who knows Gatsby’s secret is Nick; Gatsby spilled everything to him once they became really good friends. “He had one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced, or seemed to face, the whole external world for an instant and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself”(Fitzgerald 48). Gatsby believes that money can buy his happiness and more importantly Daisy. Daisy is the perfect wife in his eyes just because her physical beauties, which make Gatsby, look like a selfish and arrogant man. At the same time he seems like a hopeless romantic too. He lives his life around how it will affect daisy and his future with her. When he builds his mansion he knows it is right across the lake from Daisy and Tom Buchannan’s mansion he does this just to be close to her. He even sets up a visit with Daisy through her cousin Nick Carraway. He is a very nervous man when it comes to Daisy; everything has to be perfect for her. Gatsby cares more about how things look then how they should feel. At Nick’s house he has gardeners come and decorators come to set up everything before Daisy gets there, if it was really love they would not care just as long as they were together.
