The Great Gatsby is a novel written by one of the greatest American authors, Francis Scott Fitzgerald born in 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota, United States. It is published in 1925. Initially, he does not know a great success, but after 1950, it will be an incredible success around the globe. (Preface p. 11) On reading Fitzgerald 's life we understand the sense of lost generation and read the example of one of his heroes in Gatsby. We can find in this character a close visible with its creator.
The story tells of global ideas, but focuses more on American society of the 1920s through a man who wants to climb up the wealth and to be confronted with the reality that it can not allow it all privileges enjoyed by people from the upper class. This …show more content…
The narrator, on the 1st person does the story as a witness and actor in the drama. It therefore takes the role of the reader, as it perceives the hero and the other characters that, through the vision of Nick Carraway, the narrator. The tone and the vision he will give the drama are justified from the first page. "Every time you prepare to criticize someone...” (p. 19) Nick is not the spokesman of his hero, but does not send forth judgment. Before considering the narrator himself then Gatsby and other characters, we will focus on how the writer has organized this novel to give it a dramatic interest and a growing tension. The story is staged, a queued player that really perceives when the reader rereads again. The ability of the narrative is not to present Gatsby but to evoke him very negatively by the narrator, p. 20. But from the outset we learn that this man died decried at the time of the story. The mystery, awaiting explanation leads the reader 's interest. We arrive to the character of the place through approximation reserved for the extravagant riches and Gatsby’s big and beautiful house, then finally, p. 43 "a character out of the shadows”. This strange appearance gives the hero a mysterious and worrisome picture. Previously, between the negative remarks of the narrator and the author this apparition gave first place to other characters. Tom, Daisy, Jordan, rich neighbors, perverted by the easy life and alcohol. The action is to orient this couple Tom and Daisy, and do not talk about Gatsby but at the end, the reader will understand the links between the two sides of the bay West and East Egg. Gatsby is still very mysterious. He is barely seen. It appears as the main organizer of the pleasures of these people, but without real consistency. At first, I even wondered if he really existed.
