Sigmund Freud, the most famous psychiatrist of that day, wrote that an individual’s past has a major impact of one’s entire life. He was very popular during that time and Fitzgerald certainly must have been aware of Freud’s work. Towards the middle of the novel, Nick discovers more of the truth surrounding Gatsby’s past and attempts to analyze him. He finds out that Gatsby had begun to reinvent himself when he was only a teenager. “His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people--his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all. The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself… So he invented just the sort Jay Gatsby that a seventeen-year old boy would be likely to invent.” (98) Nick is carefully psychoanalyzing Gatsby in an effort to gain further insight into his acquisition of wealth. Gatsby wants to be the man who will rescue Daisy from her unhealthy marriage. Nick understands that once Gatsby reaches adulthood, he is so stuck in the past that it prevents him from moving forward in his life. Music sets the tone of the crazy exuberance of the 20’s and ushers in the new age that rejects many of the old classical customs and traditions. Gatsby throws lavish parties, people drink and act inappropriately according to the old ways. All of the main characters have deep unconscious psychological issues that Fitzgerald analyzes through Nick. Gatsby is the most tragic character because he lets one person destroy his life and he is never happy with what he has. He doesn’t do anything for himself, but rather for Daisy. Fitzgerald uses poetic elements throughout the novel in a very modern way. Although the novel begins and ends with, poetry exists throughout the whole novel. During 78 years between the writing of The Great Gatsby and The Hulk, people have still managed to keep up the ability to reinvent themselves. The expression “rags to riches” plays out all around the world with varying degrees of success. On the other hand, many individuals, like Gatsby, ruin their lives as a result of many psychological problems.
