Nick is being invited over to Gatsby’s house for parties and lunches. Nick is middle class and he has somehow heightened his social class by having friends in the upper class like Gatsby and Tom Buchanan. Gatsby invited Nick over for lunch and Nick was “ looking with admiration at his car”(pg 64) Nick was fascinated that he owned a car as luxurious as this one! Nick could not afford an expensive car like that which all ties back to the diverseness in social class between Nick and Gatsby throughout the duration of this time period. Nick feels inferior to Gatsby because he does not have as nice of goods as Gatsby does. Nick has also concluded that Gatsby is just using him to get near Daisy, while also keeping their relationship a secret from outsiders to protect Daisy’s reputation. While at lunch, Nick “ caught sight of Tom Buchanan across the crowded room” (pg 73). He went to say hello, Tom was at an expensive restaurant because he has the old money to do so, unlike Nick which shows that he is being pulled up into a higher social class. Nick being friends with Tom is a little strange because Tom is so rich and likes to brag about what he has and Nick is in the middle class and has an average job and an average salary which shows that Nick is being moved
