He believes that Gatsby’s American Dream was ultimately corrupt, since both the means and the goal was corrupt: even though Gatsby’s motivation, love, may be said to be pure, his obsession toward this dream caused his means to be corrupt, and even his goal, Daisy, who is a symbol of materialism, was corrupt. “The object of Gatsby’s obsession [was] unworthy of herculean efforts made on her behalf” (Foster 143). Nick also compared Gatsby to the Dutch sailors who first arrived at America, whose eyes beheld the “fresh, green breast of the new world” (Ch. 9). “The pioneer vision of America, and Gatsby’s vision of Daisy” (Lehan 123) seem to parallel each other, both of which lack the moral center.…

In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby the label of outsider is awarded to Nick despite a majority of his characteristics fitting the mold of an average American man. An outsider can be defined as “a person who does not belong to a particular group; a contender not expected to win.” However, the novel seems to insinuate that it is not membership of a group that determines outsider status, but possession of power. Throughout American history, it is not the minority that is automatically the outsiders it has been those who power has been systematically stripped away. In The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby could hardly be described as a member of the majority demographic because of his obscene wealth and illegal business practices.…

Nick immediately portrays his dislike for the wealthy and spends the majority of the novel divided between acceptance and demoralized view. Gatsby aims to be respected and approved by the people he deems to be his peers by constantly lying and adding to his extravagant lifestyle. His rise into the American dream is damaged with corruption.…

The American classic, The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, depicts a time of great excitement during the Roaring Twenties, The Jazz Age. The story is a first hand account of Nick’s illustrious yet mysterious neighbor, Jay Gatsby, at the climax of his life with everything to lose. As good and evil battle over the heart of long sought after love interest, Daisy Buchanan, the inevitable occurs and the hero is once again vanquished by the evil and undeserving who conspire against him. Fitzgerald employs the power couple, Tom and Daisy, to illustrate the fact that the affluent, and in this case evil, will always prove themselves both treacherous and victorious in the end. On the surface of the novel written by Scott F. Fitzgerald, one may say that "The Great Gatsby" illustrates a classic American story with a plot twist, having one of the preeminent characters pass in an abrupt and unforeseen way. However, underneath that very surface lies the resounding theme of the novel—The American Dream. "The Great Gatsby" is a pure symbolic reflection of America in the 1920s, depicting the effects of the sudden boom in the marketplace and the intensified materialistic views people gained. The American Dream in the novel is stripped of its ambition and gaiety once Fitzgerald spun a mordant critique of that particular decaying illusion in the society of the '20s, where people 's ethical significance was splintering, and their giddy greed for wealth and superfluous material items resulted in hedonism—which very well still happens today.…
