Gatsby and Daisy met before World War 1. He was young and unsuitable. Daisy may have found him even more attractive because he was unsuitable. Gatsby saw a young, beautiful woman and he wanted her. The war separated them and Daisy married Tom, who was her social equal.
After the war, Gatsby turned to organized crime to make enough money to be on the fringe of Daisy’s social circle. In chapter one we see Gatsby standing on his balcony, which looks out to Tom and daisy’s dock. He sees a green light and his arms are outstretched. He is reaching for Daisy, his dream woman.
