The Great Festival Of Vijaya Dashain

Dashain is one of the greatest festivals of Nepal. It is based on the lunar calendar and falls in the months of September or October. Dashain is the longest and the most auspicious festival in the Nepalese annual calendar which is observed for 15 days from the new moon day called Ghatasthapan to the full moon day called Kojagrat Purnima. Among these fifteen days, the most important days of the celebration are the first, seventh, eighth, ninth and the tenth days. It is the longest as well as a most anticipated festival of the country. It is the festival of great delight, enthusiasm, and rapture. It is also known as Bada Dasain and Vijaya Dashami. This festival is also referred to its emphasis on the gathering of the family. People return their home from different parts of the country or the world, to celebrate together.

Mahishasura, ahead of a demon, had created terror in the devlok, the world of gods, and declared war against god sixteen days before the Dashain and those sixteen days are called Sorasharad. All the gods and saints prayed to holy spirits and deceased for those sixteen days to gather energy, power, and knowledge needed for the war.
