The Great Dividing Ranges

Improved Essays
The Great Dividing Ranges also known as the Eastern Ranges are a mountain range geographically located in Australia. The great ranges spand from the north eastern tip of Queensland down southwards to the edge of New South Wales eventually ending in the west most part of Victoria. The width of the range varies slightly along its length from 160km to over 300km wide. Despite the slightly misleading title the ranges are not a single mountain range but actually consist of an intricate variety of mountain ranges, plateaus, upland areas and escarpments. The overall climate of the Appalchian region can greatly vary depending on which area is being focused on. In most areas, the climate is temperate and humid under 2000ft of elevation, and gets colder as the elevation increases. Also, the climate is temperate as the mountains are in very close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Furthermore, fog is usually present year-round because cold waters from the Labrador Current collide with warm waters from the Gulf Stream. Moreover, the air pushes the moisture from the ocean into the mountain region, making it very moist annually.…

An alternate source elaborates that the Southern Mixed Prairie encompasses eastern New Mexico to eastern Texas, and southern Oklahoma to northern Mexico (Holechek, Pieper & Herbel, 2011). Sometimes coupled with the central mixed prairie, the southern mixed prairie can span Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas…

After a voyage to the East Indies, Bering joined the fleet of Tsar Peter I the Great as a sublieutenant. In 1724 the tsar appointed him leader of an expedition to determine whether Asia and North America were connected by land, because Russia was interested both in colonial expansion in North America and in finding a northeast passage—i.e., a sea route to China around Siberia. (In 1648 a Russian, Semyon Dezhnyov, had sailed through the Bering Strait, but his report went unnoticed until 1736.) On July 13, 1728, Bering set sail from the Siberian peninsula of Kamchatka and in August passed through the Bering Strait into the Arctic Ocean. Bad weather prevented thorough observation, and, though he did not sight the North American coast, he concluded…
