“The Great Debaters” a film released in 2007, depicted the struggle against racial injustice in the 1930’s and how mastering the art of communication enabled a select group of black students to modify perceptions of the African American plight and intellect. It is a drama based upon the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, a professor and poet, who inspired his students to become the first African American college to debate Harvard, an all white college and the national champions. Tolson, a professor at the all black Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, formed the school’s debate team with the hopes of fighting discrimination and separatism through communication.
