Critical Thinking

Module 5 Discussion To expand our knowledge, we compare the experiences of others to our own personal beliefs. In Thinking Critically, John Chaffee mentions the importance of using, “all your critical thinking abilities to examine what others suggest you to believe” (218). In order to construct truthful beliefs, the reliability of other people’s experiences must be to a specific standard. Determining whether the source makes accurate observations, looking into the past reliability of the source, and checking the credentials of the source’s author are the three key points Chaffee further explains in the textbook to conduct a proper evaluation of a potential reliable source. By bringing up faulty reports, this article questions the integrity of the issue that is global warming. Buchanan does use other sources to justify the occasions where scientific discoveries have been proven fake. To me, the reliability of this source is doubtful because there was no evidence used to show that global warming does not exist, which would have supported the false reports. Even if those reports are wrong, that does not mean Buchanan can question the entire concept of global warming by stating, “global warming is the great hoax of the 21st century” (242). Due to the inconsistency between the evidence and the claims made, I think this article heavily reflects Buchanan's beliefs more than actual fact. I disagree with this article the most because of the way the author handled his argument. Even though I do not think of global warming in the same way as Buchanan, I tried to look at the issue through his perspective. The author spent more time trying to prove why people should not believe in global warming reports rather than finding scientific research that supports his view. Also, I felt his occupation did not provide strong enough credibility to make him a reliable source to speak against climate change without using scientific research from other
