The Great Barrier Reef: A Short Story

Percival had been in such a rush he’d forgotten his sunglasses. The bright, late-morning sun blasted through his car’s windshield, but he hardly noticed. The ridiculous traffic jam on the highway was the only thing to which he paid attention.

He banged his fists against the steering wheel. “Move, damn it, move, move!”

Nope, nothing but red brake lights for as far as the eye could see. He wanted to hop out of his car and run down the road screaming that this was an emergency, and for people to get the hell out of the way, but he resisted. He had to stay calm or he’d never make it. And the fact his husband was in the hospital was all his fault.

Taking a deep breath, he thought back to earlier that morning.

Anything. I love you, Gwaine, so much.”

“Tonight, there’s a special on the History Channel about the Great Barrier Reef.” Gwaine opened his eyes and smiled. “Will you watch it with me?”

“Great Barrier…?” Percival couldn’t stop himself from laughing. “You’re on your deathbed, and your first thought is the History Channel? Why am I not surprised?”

They shared a chuckle, and carefully, Percival leaned in and gave Gwaine a quick, gentle kiss on the lips. “I am so sorry for what I did before,” Percival said. “You mean everything to me, and if you want to listen to your shows with the volume blasting, I’ll wear earplugs. We’ll make it work.”

“No need. I ordered headphones off Amazon last night. Because I love you, too, my strapping hubby.”

A stout, white-haired doctor strode into the room. “Ah, you must be Percival. Your husband is the man of the hour for saving that child. I’m Dr. Gaius White. I’m so sorry I couldn’t give you information over the phone. I hope you’ll forgive me.”

“It’s fine. Will he be all right?”

“He took quite the hit, but after a splenectomy and a few pins in his tibia, I am certain he’ll recover well. I’m shocked he wasn’t injured far worse. But I’m afraid we must bring him up to surgery right

The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is found off the northeastern coast of Queensland, Australia, in the Coral Sea of the Pacific Ocean. Scientists believe that the coral reef structure was formed 60,000 years ago, but deteriorated due to climate & sea level changes. However, the coral reefs grew over the old structure. The current GBR is about 6,000 - 8,000 years old. The reef’s abiotic factors include sunlight, soil, water, climate, & temperature.…

“We should preserve every scrap of biodiversity as priceless while we learn to use it and come to understand what it means to humanity” (Edward Owen Wilson, 2006). The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1981 and stretches for more than 2300 kilometres along the northeast coast of Australia, including an area of about 347 800 square kilometres of seabed. It is the largest coral reef ecosystem in the world with 2500 coral reefs and is home to more than 1500 species of fish and 5000 species of mollusc. Approximately 215 species of birds are found on its islands and cays. Despite the GBR being given World Heritage status the health of the GBR has declined to date.…

The steady flow of traffic coming towards us wouldn’t have had to find alternate routes to try and avoid one another. Three cars went over the embankment. No one survived the mountain run. Two more cars were dangling dangerously over the edge, with only the guard rail clutching small bits of metal, trying to grasp whatever it could to hold on to the cars so they wouldn’t fall. I listened to a lady inside one of the cars screaming for someone to help her baby, still buckled into his car seat, but hanging out the window.…

To give insight into the reefs that exist around the world, I will explain to you the complexity of the tank that exists in my living room and the process I have had to go in order to get the tank where it is today. The first step in starting a tank is to use the most pure water that is obtainable called reverse osmosis water that is nearly 100% pure. This is normal tap water that is filtered through fiber cartridge filters, activated carbon, reverse osmosis membrane and then is ran through two sets of UV sterilizers. Once the tank is full of the pure water, the levels of different minerals and trace elements must be added to make it able to accommodate different types of organisms. Then the salt must then be added to achieve a salinity of…

The Great Barrier Reef, located in Australia, is the largest reef in the world with an area of 344,400km. Sadly, divers discovered that up to 50% of the reef was dead due to coral bleaching. Coral bleaching is a process that occurs when the water surrounding the coral becomes too warm, resulting in the coral expelling the algae living inside it and then turning completely white. Although coral is able to survive this process, it makes them extremely fragile and increases their chance of morality.…
