Picasso was inspired to make this painting when he went to a museum of ethnographic in which it had African sculptures he tried to combine the angular structures of the “primitive art” and his new ideas about cubism (Voorhies). This new stile had a lot of mixed reactions from his viewers some of Picassos fellow artists were horrified and disappointed in his new style of depicting African Americans in his new cubistic form and others were mesmerized and very interested in this new way of painting. Another one of Willem de Koonings paintings is called “Woman/Verso: Untitled” this particular painting is one of his surviving painting from his women series: year 1948. He used a lot of different materials in his painting a lot of his paint was specifically made in his home other things he used were Oil and enamel it was also painted on a fiberboard. Picasos painting on the other hand was created on a large canvas and used oil paints. Each of the five femails in Picassos painting are depicted in a different confrontational positions and all of them are not conventionally feminine. The next painting that will be discussed is “queen of hearts” witch is portrayed in a totally different way. He worked on this painting for over a period of three years between 1943 and 1946. To create this piece of art he used oil and charcoal on fiberboard. This painting is an early representation of a femail subject it also shows one of his earliest attemps to reinterpret the traditional femail figure in a relatively abstract way (Susan). Koonings painting takes a different turn in depicting the femail form in this painting Picassos does to. The next painting that will be discussed by Picasso is called “Dora Maar au Chat”. Picasso painted this during the second world war in 1941. This painting depicts Dora Maar, Picassos lover, sitting on a chair and there is a small black cat right nex to her sholder. This painting is one of several portraits of Dora Maar by Picasso over a dacade long relationship. Although both artists use a variety of bright colors the way they use them are quite different Kooning uses the colors flatly and they fight to overpower eachother not much value. The background shows some repetition of the geometrical figures. On the other hand Picasos use for its brilliance of colors balance eachother giving it a sence of unity.
