For roughly the past 100 years the presidential elections have been a very sensitive subject, and it begs the question of what makes a good president. Although there are generally a few presidents who rank at the top, to name someone the best president is very subjective. Opinions can change due to many reasons; the main being the political party one associates their self with. One way to gauge a president is by how many terms they served. Teddy Roosevelt had served two terms and, although he did not win the election of 1912, he is still generally considered to be one of the most effective presidents. Many foreign countries had threatened to ban American imports by throwing out both the good and bad meat. Meanwhile, Americans had longed for safer canned products. The novel written by Upton Sinclair, called The Jungle, had only excited more Americans for a reform. This novel showed the public how unsanitary the product packing industry was. The American population, including Roosevelt, was so appalled that an investigation occurred. The report was even worse than Sinclair had described. Roosevelt, outraged and disgusted, persuaded Congress to pass the Meat Inspection Act of 1906 which stated that all meat shipped over state lines would be inspected by the Federal Government. Along with the Meat Inspection Act, the Pure Food and Drug Act was passed. It was designed to prevent the change and mislabeling of foods and pharmaceuticals. I see these laws as Roosevelt’s fourth greatest achievement because it improved the American future in ways directly related to the health of the population. Even though similar laws may have been passed within the next few years after Roosevelt’s time, the earlier start produced more time for beneficial development in the United States as well as foods safe from toxic
