Personality can be the driving force behind a characters actions. I had never realized this until Sam and Jenna's interactive oral presentation. They broke down the psychology behind the Myers-Briggs Type Theory and incorporated into Anton Chekov’s characters in The Grasshopper. The Myers-Briggs Type Theory is the idea that everyone belongs to one of sixteen different personality types. These sixteen personality types use 4 primary functions when processing information, such as how a person gains their energy, how they gather information, how they make decisions and how they handle themselves within the external world. This is extremely evident in her actions. Olga’s materialism is truly showcased when her husband dies and the only thing she can focus on is the ugly interior of their house. She is also very artistic. When the narrator describes her he says, “Everything she did was exceptionally graceful, artistic and charming” (144). We also can’t forget about the social connection Olga has with the external world. She constantly has to be surrounded by others and she gains energy by surrounding herself with people. Finally, Olga isn’t very perceptive. This can be seen when the narrator states “She did not understand what was meant by a ‘readership’ or ‘general pathology’… and she said nothing” (159). Dymov on the other hand is completely opposite to Olga. He is an INTP, which means he is logical, anti-social, un-artistic and self-sacrificial. He has a hard time understanding art but he is very good at understanding art and medicine. All of this can be exposed when he says “I have spent all my life in working at natural science and medicine, and I have never had the time to take an interest in the arts” (144). He also doesn’t enjoy spending time with other people, unlike his wife, Olga.
