The Grandmother in A Good Man is Hard to Find

In the short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, she uses the character of the grandmother to present the cons of self-centeredness. Although it is very obvious the grandmother lacks self-awareness, she still considers herself a good woman. The appearance of the grandmother described throughout this short story is shown to the reader as an old, southern, Caucasian woman. The way she spoke and how she chose to dress are both indications that she does indeed consider herself a lady although her unflattering personality did not match. Throughout the story the grandmother’s selfishness, judgmental actions, dishonesty, and forgetfulness was sure to put the family in

Hey Pop, can’t we go see the house with the secret panel?” The aggravation from his kids wanting to go see the house brings him great stress while driving and this causes them to get into a car accident. The grandmother seems to have been the cause of this due to the fact that she triggered the topic by bringing up the story of the house to the children, making them very interested in the idea. In her mind she knew that this story would get her grandchildren excited and possibly persuade Bailey to do what she wants. After the accident, the
Kuhl 5 grandmother never mentions to anybody that the house with the secret panel is actually located in Tennessee and not in Florida. She knows that mentioning the location of the house will turn her family against her, so it would be in her best interest to keep her mouth shut.
There is a shocking moment in this short story where the grandmother speaks completely out of line, calling a little African American boy a “nigger boy.” From this very inappropriate phrase, we are able to see her true colors. The grandmother seems to have all the characteristics of what a good person isn’t. A good person doesn’t judge others based on what they do and do not have. After she gives her grandchildren, John and June, a lecture about being a good person, the grandmother contradicts herself by saying, “Little niggers in the country don’t have things like we do. If I could, I’d paint that

Taking a look at the grandmother, it is important to note her namelessness, because this characteristic signifies a deeper symbolic meaning. The story begins, “The grandmother didn’t want to go to Florida” (1). There are three unnamed characters in the story: the grandmother, the children’s mothers, and The Misfit. Throughout, the grandmother is referred to by her title in place of her name, which allows the reader to see the grandmother as an illustration of the typical person. Because of her namelessness, she comes to represent everyone, and her external and internal conflicts with vanity, control, and egotism represent the collective of humanity’s struggles.…

The grandmother was judging the children's mother because the children's mother was wearing pants and a t-shirt. “In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady.” (O’Connor, 2) When the grandmother was thinking this, she was referencing that the children’s mother was wearing pants and only proper ladies wear skirts and dresses so, therefore, the children’s mother was not a proper woman. And O’Connor uses this to shows that during the grandmothers time, pants for women was not acceptable then judges the children's mother for it, and the grandmother still believes that it's not acceptable even when times have been changing. Also, in A Good Man is Hard to Find, the grandmother basically wasn't religious so she didn't have the guilt of being a mean and rude old lady, then she showed her religious side when she was in trouble.…

Films that are adaptations of novels at times leave out important things that made the novel so special, and in return the film ends up as a poor portrayal of the story. In the novel The Great Gatsby, Scott Fitzgerald devotes a considerable amount of attention to build up the relationship between Nick Carraway and Jordan baker, as well as providing Nick Carraway the ability to have more freedom in the way he expresses his thoughts and feelings. These concepts shift in the scene from the film directed by Baz Luhrmann, as it does not portray the intimate relationship between Nick Carraway and Jordan Baker. The main focus of the film is Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, and because of that, it does not allow for another romance in the story. The film 's restraint of time also damages its ability to express the thoughts and feelings of the characters, specifically Nick Carraway.…

In her short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, Flannery O’Connor introduces the reader to a world of family issues, danger, and murder. The story was written in 1955 during a period of social and racial unrest in the southern United States. Mostly, the story follows O 'Connor 's basic Southern Gothic writing style, a work that is "cold and dispassionate, as well as almost absurdly stark and violent" (Galloway). While the quote gives major insight into the tone of the story, it does not offer a glimpse into O 'Connor 's real message of the story. Her take on the characters is a complex mixture of agreement and disapproval.…

This shows that it is intentional that O 'Connor wrote the Grandmother to not be a good person. By having another character state that the Grandmother was not good, the point of the story is reinforced. This is not a story that is meant to scare the reader with the shocking violence, nor is it meant to make the reader laugh with it 's comedic scenes. This is a story of an awful woman that is so caught up in judging others and believing that she should be the one deciding if a person is good or not that she is unable to see the wrongness in herself. “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” sends the message that one should not be so quick to judge others, especially when one is not a very good person…
