It is not uncommon for newly graduated college students stepping into the world to experience a heavy dose of reality. It also is not unusual for college students to feel an overwhelming sense of loneliness when faced with reality. Directed by Mike Nichols,” The Graduate ”, a film that observes a newly graduated college student, Benjamin, played by actor Denis Hoffman, dealing with reality and all of the disconnection it might come with. By highlighting and focusing on Benjamin’s social behaviors, his personal affairs, and his way of living “The Graduate” showcases a theme of not just loneliness but instead something far more torturous: isolation. In the beginning of the film, Benjamin’s social skills quickly start to define his character as awkward, brusque, and distant. When brought downstairs by his parents, Benjamin is immediately swarmed by various friends and family all congratulating him on his achievements. The smiles on their faces change as each of them begin realizing what happened. Besides fleeing from a wedding with a girl that seconds ago was just married, Benjamin, by the look on his face, is hit with a heavy dose of reality when he realizes he just completed another goal. The same look of loneliness, disconnection, and ultimately isolation appears back onto Benjamin’s face as they ride off together on the bus. Life after anything is always never the same as it once was before. That could be the reason why some newly graduated college students become overwhelmed with reality thus resulting in their feelings of loneliness or isolation. Benjamin set goals to reach to deal with his isolation, others might find a new hobby or a friend. Some might try getting into a relationship to help themselves feel not so alone in the world because isolation can leave a person painfully
