Particularly in the tribal culture, people can get caught up in gambling, alcoholism and even crime. However, if the government along with key leaders of the tribe worked together to make education number one for the children and young adults there would be a shift in behaviors. Along with negative distractions, “the increasing concentration of minorities in some schools also has spurred concern about the disparity in resources available to affluent and poor schools, which often have significant minority populations, and about the quality of education received by minority students.” (-----). For example, if the government funded programs to assist Native American’s in reading programs or after school tutoring programs it would keep kids focused on school and busy rather than allowing them to have ample free time to get caught up in negative activities. Not only have several studies been conducted but a “Justice Department study found Native American youths are exposed to violence at higher rates than any other racial group in the country — with a resulting level of post-traumatic stress disorder equal to military veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.” (-----). The stress and anxiety that these students endure due to problems at home, inadequate amount of resources and thousands of distractions cause the last thing on their mind to be gaining an education. Particularly, if their family lifestyle does not value learning or does not encourages them to read or do homework they won’t follow through with assignments.
