Soft violence refers to any non-physical violence, such as discrimination, verbal harassment, and inequity. Sexual minorities are paying less than the normal group of people with no surprise. According to a research, “the wage gap between straight men and gay men in the same occupations with similar education, training, exam scores, years of experience, and demographic characteristics ranges from 15-28%.” (Antecol, 2008) This is a kind of discrimination and unfair to the sex and gender minorities. It indicates that it’s a common soft violence exist in the society. People just can’t think outside the box.
In addition, sexual stigma has negative effect for sexual and gender minority people. Dr. Herek believe that there are many negative effects for the LGBT people who experience violence. Violence will increase victims’ mental pressure, and also create a subjective sense of threat. These will motivate them to engage in a variety of proactive behaviors to protect themselves from possible sexual stigma. (Zweigenhaft, 2006) Professor Zweiganhaft and Domhoff, who wrote the book Diversity in the Power Elite: How It Happened, Why It Matters, believe that “While America’s institutions of power often do not reflect the diversity of the American population, few groups have been more systematically excluded from the echelons of power than sexual minorities. Whether by law or policy, open discrimination or neglect, lesbians and gay men rarely make it into the power elites.” (Zweigenhaft, 2006) This is a really huge obstacle for sexual and gender minority to
