The Gospel Of Matthew: Transition Into The New Testament

Improved Essays
The Gospel of Matthew has many interesting stories within it. Matthew is the first book in the transition from the Old Testament into the New Testament. Matthew starts off with the wonderful conception and birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. He writes, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 1:20. He praises Joseph for not leaving Mary; he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary home as his wife, where she had their son who they named Jesus. Although this was an important story in the Gospel of Matthew, one thing that stood out to me the most was Matthew chapters 5-7. This is named the Sermon on the Mount. This is where Jesus speaks to his followers, and becomes very well known. With his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus’ …show more content…
In these three chapters, Jesus is addressing the people and how they should live their lives to glorify Him. He speaks of how we should not do things in public so that others will know, but rather behind closed doors, and for this He will reward you. “ But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen, Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you,” Matthew 6:6. After telling of how you should pray in secret to your Father, he speaks of how you should pray and introduces the Lord’s Prayer. In the coming verses he speaks of fasting, adultery, and judging others. One of my favorite versus in the Bible happens to be in Matthew; Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” I always use this as a daily reminder of not to worry too

The Proto-Gospel can be classified as what is known as an Infancy Gospel, and provides and understanding of the questions raised by early Christian and Christian-opposing communities. The canonical Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John – provide understanding of early Christian focus on the death and resurrection of Jesus in the first century, but by the end of the first century, Christians began to expand and to show interest in stories not discussed in the earliest traditions, such as Jesus’ infancy and youth. This is evident in the addition of birth narratives that can be found in the Gospels According to Matthew (Matt 1:128-25) and Luke (1:26-2:38), but not Mark (which is believed to have been written earlier) (Ehrman 2016). But even the additions of these stories prompted questions surrounding Jesus’ birth and childhood, such as, whether Jesus was divine as a child (which is explored in The Infancy Gospel of Thomas) and why Mary, of all Jewish women, was chosen to bear the Son of God.…

Matthew’s Gospel illustrates Jesus as a benevolent leader that was both compassionate and resilient. He is portrayed as an almost magical and superior being, and soon after his birth is dubbed “king of the Jews” (Matthew 2:2). It seems as though every aspect of the child is enchanted. He suddenly “appeared” before John the Baptist to be baptized in the Jordan – soon afterward, “the heavens opened” and the voice of God descended, proclaiming that Jesus is his “Son, the Beloved”, making it clear that this boy was no ordinary one (Matthew 3:17). Even in his younger years, Jesus is characterized as awe-inspiring.…

Chapter Six Summary Chapter six explores what the author calls the early church approach of verse by verse preaching (Allen Jr., 39). This form flows the way it is labeled, verse by verse with the addition of application between each verse. A pendulum like structure that swings from exegesis of the biblical text to the application portion immediate after the verse is explained. As the author states, and I agree, the verse by verse form’s strengths is that using this form allows for the text to reveal itself to the hearers and speak in its own way (41). The preacher is simply the mediator, or prophet if you will that helps the hearers apply its truths by use of exegesis.…

Worrying is for the Weary In this essay I will be focusing on the story from Luke 12:27-34, Do Not Worry, and comparing it to the same story by Matthew 6:25-34. Worrying is an inevitable problem for Christians even though we know we are protected my God. In Luke 12:27-34 Jesus is confirming to his disciples that they do not have to worry in Luke 12: 22 when Luke writes, “Then Jesus said to his disciples: “There fore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.” We are blessed to be chosen to live this beautiful life through Him and for Him.…

His first miracle was turning water into wine at a wedding celebration (John 2:1-11). Jesus also demonstrates authority over nature when he orders the wind and waves to be quiet and when he walks on water out to his disciples (Mark 4:35-41, Matthew 14:22-33). Jesus also raises two people to life from the dead, Lazarus and a young girl (John 11:17-44, Matthew 9:18-26). Jesus repeatedly heals the sick, lame, blind, and those with leprosy in all four gospels. In the book of Luke Jesus reads from the book of Isaiah in the synagogue on the Sabbath and claims to fulfill the prophecy: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because he has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord” (Luke 4:18, Isaiah 61:1,2).…

They talk about Jesus in a large crowds and how people will not listen to Jesus even with silence.
