The Gospel Of John Essay

The movie, The Gospel of John, follows just one gospel: The Gospel of John. The Gospel of John (film) follows exactly what the scripture says. When I looked up the movie on Netflix, I found that there are also several versions of the movie to accompany different versions of the Bible, including the New International Version, and the New King James Version. However, even though the narration of the movie follows the scripture directly, there were some scenes that were added in. For example, John is noted for how it does not contain a birth/Christmas story. But in the movie, during the first chapter, there is a scene showing a newly born child. With this particular example, it is obvious that this scene came from another gospel. However, the …show more content…
I believe these ideas most likely came from the producer’s interpretation. I do not think they affect the overall portrayal of Jesus compared to reading the written text – I believe that it gives some context to the scripture and resolves some confusion to what the scriptures are saying. In the instance of John, the film made Jesus seem less focused on Himself and who He is. When studying John in class, it was noted that there are many “I” statements, and copious numbers of times where Jesus is speaking about who He is and how He is sent from God. This can portray Jesus as a pompous person, but the film toned down this presentation from the text. Lastly, the film also depicted Jesus’s baptism by John the Baptist. Though this is not in the text, I feel that it is an important contribution to the film, and for people who may not be following the text while watching the movie. Altogether, I believe that the slight adjustments made in the film are beneficial to understanding who Jesus is and the effect He had on not only His disciples, but also all of the other people living at that

Inevitably, too, there would be a divergence of views between those who, on the one hand, lay relatively heavy weight on the text in its final state and those who, on the other hand, consider the last form to be rather incidental once the generic character of its parts has been determined. ”6 Annette Merz and Gerd Theissen in their book The Historical Jesus: A Comprehensive Guide says for material that is written about Jesus a collection of sayings was one of the earliest…

These people knew him or his apostles and Jesus’ teachings well. Because Jesus had been crucified and resurrected the Gospels were coming from a post-resurrection view. While the Good News was being spread and taught orally, some passages were altered slightly with the telling of the stories. However, the message of the Gospels had the same important meaning.…

One cannot help but love the uniqueness of this gospel. It gives an intriguing, symbolic message to present the story of Jesus. We also encounter Jesus in a way we had never seen prior. He tends to speak in full discourses to address situations rather than speaking in parables as seen in the Synoptic gospels (LTJ, pg. 469). John’s gospel also presents us with information that is not recorded in any other gospel.…

John's relationship with the church during the latter years of his life was a rather turbulent one, which underwent several changes. The turmoil began upon Hubert Walter's death in 1205, when it could not be decided who was going to be the new Archbishop of Canterbury. It could be argued that this was a change in John's relationship with the church, but it is perhaps more significant that it was the catalyst for a huge chain of events that would change John's relationship with the Church more significantly. Some historians hold the view that 'the basic cause of the quarrel was the issue of who was to appoint the archbishop of Canterbury when Hubert Walter died in 1205'.1 The schism created by the opposing opinions on who was to be elected as Archbishop of Canterbury was hugely significant, and in a letter to from Pope Innocent III to the bishops in England, in 1207, Innocent writes that John is 'persecuting'2 Stephen Langton.…

Gibson used more than just use the basic story of Christ’s death in the film. For example the crucification details were taken from The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This book is based on the visions a German nun called Anne Catherine Emmerich. She believed that her visions had much more than the Gospel version of the story of Christ's suffering. For exmaple, in the part where the Gospels only tell that Jesus was being whipped, she added much more detail that grabbed Gibson’s interest.…

The film ‘The Birth of Jesus’ was a film that is based around the birth of Jesus. It was taken directly out of the Bible but was altered a bit to suite audiences and have a higher profit. The movie provides a reasonably accurate representation of the birth of Jesus. There are a few scenes that are not accurate though. For example there was a scene where Joseph is walking Mary and the donkey across the river then a snack attacks the donkey causing it to fall with Mary.…

How and Why Luke Would Have Edited Mark’s Gospel There are a number of differences in the gospel accounts by Luke and Mark. The Gospel according to Luke is considered more detailed and accurate. In the event that Luke has edited the Gospel according to Mark, he would have revised its chronological order of events and separation of certain fused events. Luke would also have edited the duality writing style in Mark’s discourse (Muddiman & Barton 257).…

Cinematic portrayals of Biblical figures are nothing new, but this seemingly new trend of filling in historical gaps of Biblical history - as it were - most certainly is. In particular, Noah depicted the actual construction of the Ark, Exodus: Gods and Kings added to Moses’ story, and Risen followed the aftermath of Christ’s death – with each film attempting to add flair to well documented scripture stories. Comparatively, The Passion of the Christ jump-started such a modern trend by carrying out its objective of ‘not holding back’ with a realistic (and brutal) depiction of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. No, it’s not the only film to bring the event to life on either the big or small screen, yet it arguably did it the best.…

The gospels in the Bible are subjective; they do not just state facts, they are a narration about Jesus’ life and works, which makes it open to interpretation. Everyone has their own concept for Jesus’ ideals of his powers. The only source for historical Jesus is found in the four gospels. While the four gospels have similarities, they also contradict each other. They were also released years after Jesus’ death, and they are not first-hand accounts.…

John of Damascus was born c. 675- 749 in Damascus under Muslim rule. His father was a Christian believer that was employed by the Caliph. John followed in his father’s footsteps working for the Caliph but eventually became a monk near Jerusalem, where he studied, wrote and preached. The fifth theme is that the Gospel looks forward to a time when Jesus will be glorified. In John’s Gospel this occurs after his death, though the Son is glorified through the cross (11:4). Moloney summarizes “The glory of God shines forth from the cross, as Jesus makes love known. However, the glorification of the Son takes place through the cross” (Moloney 96).…

Throughout the years the “Passion of the Christ” movies have been used to tell the story about Christ’s death and resurrection. Then in 2004 Mel Gibson made his version of the movie and as I like to say brought it in to the 21st century with updated graphics, violence, and blood. The combination of images, faith, and history this film truly was like no other Passion of Christ movie ever done. The Passion of the Christ is a serious and deep piece of cinematography, it not just show us how much pain one man went through for us but it celebrates for the unbeliever the triumph of humanity over an absolute brutality and through this movie for all the believers of the Christian faith this movie has become a powerful reminder that we still need to…
