The movie, The Gospel of John, follows just one gospel: The Gospel of John. The Gospel of John (film) follows exactly what the scripture says. When I looked up the movie on Netflix, I found that there are also several versions of the movie to accompany different versions of the Bible, including the New International Version, and the New King James Version. However, even though the narration of the movie follows the scripture directly, there were some scenes that were added in. For example, John is noted for how it does not contain a birth/Christmas story. But in the movie, during the first chapter, there is a scene showing a newly born child. With this particular example, it is obvious that this scene came from another gospel. However, the …show more content…
I believe these ideas most likely came from the producer’s interpretation. I do not think they affect the overall portrayal of Jesus compared to reading the written text – I believe that it gives some context to the scripture and resolves some confusion to what the scriptures are saying. In the instance of John, the film made Jesus seem less focused on Himself and who He is. When studying John in class, it was noted that there are many “I” statements, and copious numbers of times where Jesus is speaking about who He is and how He is sent from God. This can portray Jesus as a pompous person, but the film toned down this presentation from the text. Lastly, the film also depicted Jesus’s baptism by John the Baptist. Though this is not in the text, I feel that it is an important contribution to the film, and for people who may not be following the text while watching the movie. supply ran out. Mary approached her son Jesus and said, “They have no wine” (John 2:3). Jesus directed the servants to fill six large stone waterpots with water and then commanded the servants to “draw out” the contents of the jars and serve it to the governor of the feast (see John 2:8). At some point between the filling and the drawing out of the jars, the Savior miraculously changed the water to high quality wine. (see John 2:10). (Zondervan NIV Study Bible, p.1756), the purpose of The Gospel of John is clearly stated by its author (presumed to be the apostle John) - “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31). John’s Gospel differs from the Synoptics in form and perspective - but not, of course, in the basic storyline. He is born as prophesied, to much fanfare. John opens with echoing back to Genesis- “In the beginning…”…
