The Importance Of The Gospel

The Gospel is the life-transforming message for the Christian. It is the story that God saves His people time and time again, even after they continually turn away from Him. It is the message that gives hope to the Christian. It takes the broken, hopeless, sinner, and allows him or her to approach the Holy God. As defined by pastors Chandler, Patterson, and Geiger, “In its simplest from, the Gospel is God’s reconciling work in Christ-that through the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, God is making all things new both personally for those who repent and believe and cosmically as He redeems culture and creation from its subjection to futility.” (Chandler, 7). In Genesis 3:21, God makes the first sacrifice in order to provide a covering for Adam and Eve. From there, God sets in place the sacrificial system, a picture of the ultimate redemption that was soon to come. Later on, God sends His Son Jesus, who is the perfect sacrifice. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, sinners have been redeemed from the pits of hell. This ties right in with what I have learned in Dr. Jones’ class. The diagram of sacrificial atonement and the definition given by Chandler are essentially one in the same, and are essential in defining the Gospel. Jesus paid the ultimate price and was able to bridge the gap between sinful man and Holy God. With sin in the world, there was no way for man to even approach God, much less be in a relationship with Him. Jesus provided the sacrifice and exchanged His worthiness for the unworthiness of mankind. As a result of this, creation has been redeemed! Through the bloodshed of Jesus, man is made new in Christ. The scarifies, the stories, and everything else in the Old Testament is a picture of the coming of Christ. In Hosea, the story of the prostitute is a picture of God pursuing us in our sinfulness. The picture of David killing Goliath is a picture of Jesus coming and destroying all the enemies of God. In the story of Abraham and Isaac, he refers to how God will provide a lamb to be a sacrifice, pointing to Jesus being the perfect lamb. The sacrifice of animals shows how blood must be shed in order to cover sin. Every single of the aspect points to Jesus coming. It also shows how Jesus is the fulfillment of all these things that mere human actions cannot cover. God has always been orchestrating the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus. God was not caught off guard when Adam and Eve sinned. He is all-knowing, and He had a plan in place to save them and all of humanity from their sin. God’s promised plan has always included Jesus. The Gospel, while it is the story of Christ, it really is the story of the Bible as a whole. The Old Testament paves the way for Jesus to come and fulfill what has been promised from the
