One of the most important pillars that Google’s foundation was formed around is the company mission, which focuses on the strong connection Google has with its users. Google’s goal is to organize the information, and deliver the most useful information for every user for free. By improving the ways people connect with information Google increases their brand equity. Google relies heavily on their users and their word of mouth in spreading information about their quality products and services instead of investing in traditional marketing. Google believes in innovation and creating products that users love instead of spending on traditional television ads or print ads. The first step Google took towards its transformation consisted of recruiting executives from creative agencies to help spread the word of Google’s products and offerings in 2007. All of Google Creative Lab (GCL) members were motivated by making a positive difference in the world by promoting Google’s free products. Google collected their revenues mainly from its Internet strategies including search-related advertising and other focus areas. Google started to take brand management more seriously and created a plan to communicate the company philosophy to its users in an effective way. Google decided to acquire companies in an attempt to reduce their dependence on advertising revenues. Google acquired YouTube and DoubleClick in 2007. After Andy Berndt joined the Google team and became the head of GCL the company started to see significant changes in their promotion strategies. Google started to change its views about traditional advertising. Google launched its first outdoor and online advertising campaign in Japan in 2008 to promote Google Maps and Gmail followed by TV advertisements during prime time. This will allow Google to reach the exact type of consumer they want and see instant returns on their overall marketing budget. I would keep empowering all of the employees to create new, innovative, and better products. Google should keep focusing on their consumers instead of being motivated by profit maximization when designing new products. This will lead to increased customer loyalty and word of mouth promotions, which lower advertising costs. Google has the monetary resources to invest in many tech start-ups. Google should do this so that they are building a large collection of innovative companies outside of Google. This will allow Google the opportunity to not only work with the technological innovations that would otherwise pose a threat, but to also be in a position to ultimately acquire and control new innovations.
