In “The Good Earth,” the idea that obligation and duty to one’s family are very important is shown throughout the text. At the beginning of the story, Wang Lung presents his grandfather’s current physical state. His grandfather is very old and dependent upon others, and as his son, Wang Lung’s duty is to care for the old man throughout his old age until he dies. Wang Lung takes care of him throughout the rest of the story until he dies. “He had to lit the fire, boiled water, and poured the water into a bowl and taken it into the room where his father sat upon his bed, coughing and fumbling for his shoes upon the floor” (page 3). This idea that obligation to one’s family is important is also shown with the relationship between Wang Lung and his wife, O-lan. When O-lan was having her first child no matter what she went out into the fields to help Wang Lung. Even after they became rich and hired servants and slaves to the house, O-lan still cooked for the family and sewing their own garments. In contrary of Wang Lung, he went out to

Constantly I think about what our life could have been if I didn't move to the U.S., how my parents could have kept up a strong relationship and a good family business. The only reason we are here is for the education this nation can offer us and a brighter future. Last year I went back to Mexico to visit my friends and relatives and it was the first time I felt happiness within oneself and I wanted to stay there longer to really enjoy the feeling of being back home. Coming back to U.S. really opened up my eyes to see what was the real meaning behind this change was and determined to finish school and have a better future than parents did. “ Well, and I am to a be a scholar, I would like to go to the south to the city and enter a great school where I can learn what it is to be learned. (page 235)”
