The Good Earth and the Virtuous Woman Olan and the Virtuous Woman are two very much alike women that are exceedingly alike considering the sustained laborious work that they perform in order to provide for their families. Neither Olan or the Virtuous Woman expect or need to be nurtured, they are consistently showing the people around them, their capability of remaining physically and mentally strong despite any obstacles or hardships that come their way. The two women provide the family with materials both needed and wanted by using what they have worked for and putting it to proper use. Olan makes soles out of paper that Wang Lung receives because it is something that her family needs. The Virtuous Woman is said to not be afraid of the snow for her household because all of her household is clothed with scarlet. Saying that her family is clothed in scarlet shows that she is resourceful and uses what she has labored for is keeping the household properly clothed. In the novel, Olan does her best to provide the family with food when they are struggling and in order to not have any mouths to feed, she even kills her own child to prevent a shortage. The Virtuous Woman also makes sure that her family has food to survive on because it states that she was like a merchant ship and brought food from afar. The Virtuous Woman however, is acknowledged for what she does for the home. Another difference in the two is that Olan’s husband has another wife toward the end of the book, but the Virtuous Woman’s husband does not. In the novel, it says “All through the long months of winter she lay dying and upon her bed, and for the first time Wang Lung and his children knew what she had been in the house and how she made comfort for them all and they had not known it”. The quote shows that Olan’s family never properly thanked or appreciated anything that Olan worked so hard for until she was literally on her deathbed. Not only had Wang Lung never appreciate what she did for him, but even bought another wife to fulfill his needs, despite Olan’s disapproval it was a time period where most wealthy men had a second wife. In the book of Proverbs, it says “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.” The verse shows that the Virtuous Woman’s hard work did not go unnoticed and she was given the respect that she fully deserves. Despite the mistreatment from Wang, Olan remained faithful to him. The Virtuous Woman also will do good and not evil all the days of her life. Knowing these two things, it easily shows that these women, although treated differently, are very much alike in
