The poem Beowulf makes a very clear distinction between the morally good characters, and the characters that are to be considered evil. It is nearly impossible to miss that the hero, Beowulf, is hailed as a hero and a king, and is often described by those around him as good and just. Oppositely, Grendel and his mother are the primarily evil figures. Grendel in particular is heavily shadowed as an evil figure, given his tendency to kill for sport. There is very little grey area, and both sides tend to highlight the good and evil qualities of the other.

In his very arrival he impresses the Danes, walking onto the shore with less fear than anyone had seen in a long time. Although he has a long history of great family, it’s important that he clarifies his own goodness through explaining the good he has already done. Just in the way he speaks to the Danes, and the way he holds himself helps aid the idea that he has come to save them, as he discusses the monsters he has already defeated. It of course helps his cause that his father has a history of fighting for the people as well. Despite the exhaustion he must be facing, Beowulf continues in his attacks because it is the right thing to do. Not only that, but he actively seeks battles if he believes that it will protect the people he was in charge of. When it comes to Grendel 's mother, he is the first to take the battle to her because he knows it is coming. He takes his protection of innocent people very seriously, and instead of waiting for her to wreak havoc on the people of Denmark he attacks her first, with of course, some assurance that he was had a possibility of winning.
