I discovered how much one person’s attitude can affect an entire group of people and the energy within a team. After witnessing the essential influence that negativity could have, I began striving to be a positive and supportive teammate, role model, and friend. I made a point to be a cheerleader for not only my own teammates, but also my opponents, letting them know when they had a nice shot and being genuinely friendly. Showing respect for my coaches was another aspect of which I was always conscious; accepting their constructive criticism in an open and receptive manner, knowing that they wanted me to improve and succeed. This year, at the end of the season, I was awarded the North Shore Conference Sportsmanship Award. Being given this award was one of the most meaningful moments I have ever experienced. With this acknowledgement, my coaches affirmed that I had been a positive influence within the sport and someone they were proud to have representing the team.
