Taylor, Lois’ family was accused of stealing an expensive car. The family was picked on, segregated, and made fun of. This happens to colored people all over the south in America. The government had allowed these innocent African Americans to be unequal to people who have white skin color because they thought that the colored people were less than the white. In the textbook on page 184, it says,”...black people had once been forced to be slaves...stupidity and ignorance… the law that said we could be treated this way in the south.” This means that the colored people were thought of less than the white. The government had allowed the colored people to go to better schools, get better seats at the movie theater, have cleaner water fountains, and better seats at the busses. Meanwhile, colored people had to sit upstairs at the movie theaters, have the schools further away, sit at the back of the bus, and much more. In the story “The Bracelet”, the government had gotten rid of all the Japanese Americans causing less worries on whether the the Japanese Americans were spies or not. Even though it was wrong to get rid of all the Japanese Americans, the government was shocked and had no idea what to do. They needed to briefly fix the problem. In the story“The Bracelet”on page 73, it says, “ ...if there were any spies around, they’d had gone back..”
This proves that the government was just being safe and wanted to get rid of any spies around. The government had fixed the problem, just not in the correct way. People should live freely, no matter how they look or where they come from. The people who were different than others were mistreated, had their families separated, and were thought of differently for no reason. How would you feel if people gave you dirty looks, made fun of you, or forced you to leave your country only because of how you looked or came from? The government had done this to countless people. People should be treated equally no matter what race. It should not matter if you look different or come from different places. People should have equal rights no matter what.
