Hera was the first known Earth goddess of fertility of crops and animals. She marries brother Zeus and becomes goddess of marriage and marital fidelity. Demeter is the goddess of fertility of soil and grain. She is associated with life, death and rebirth. Demeter is the “gift of grain” as it is said in Euripides Tragedy the Bacchae.
