The gods Demeter and Dionysus are vastly different from the Olympian gods. Demeter and Dionysus are gods which are most connected to the earth outside of Rhea. Demeter is the goddess of the corn and Dionysus is the god of wine. While each of them represent something, which is fundamentally human the two gods also represent nature itself. By acting as representations of nature, the two Gods are the mechanism in which the people of the time used to relate and understand their environment. This is a particularly important subject to me considering my career will be within environmental science.

In taking Persephone away from Demeter the landscape had to transform in order to survive without her. However, through the hard work of the village to bring peace to Demeter and the return of Persephone, the landscape was revived yet, forever changed. Therefore, Demeter expresses the complicated relationships early cultures had with their environments. The myths simply serve as a metaphorical method of analyzing their situation.
Once the balance has been upset specific action will need to be taken to restore the previous balance or create a new one. Often, in nature, the original balance cannot be restored but merely mitigated and maintained. For instance, when the Olympians did not inform Demeter of her daughter’s disappearance she refused their company until it Persephone became goddess of the spring (Ham). It took executive action by all the Olympians in order to appease Demeter after she felt as though she went through a trauma. Repeatedly, people tried to lock Dionysus away yet, the ropes would “not hold together, just as, the jail “doors unbarred themselves” (HAM). Similarly, humans have been trying numerous times to hold back nature and keep it away. Yet, nature, like Dionysus, cannot be bound by the arbitrary rules of human society. The coyotes will still consume farm animals with or without crude fencing.
Nature and Dionysus both have two sides to which describe them. They each have one side which brings joy and sustains life, yet, there is also another side which brings a brutal death to the weaker and less intelligent. Each time Dionysus was taken as prisoner at least one person recognized him as a god and pleaded with the others to release him. For instance, the helmsman demanded that the others allow Dionysus to be “set free at once” (HAM). However, the others did not listen and as result they were killed in retaliation by Dionysus. Similarly, there are numerous people throughout the world who have recognized the importance of respecting nature; thus, such advocates have called to others realize the
