In taking Persephone away from Demeter the landscape had to transform in order to survive without her. However, through the hard work of the village to bring peace to Demeter and the return of Persephone, the landscape was revived yet, forever changed. Therefore, Demeter expresses the complicated relationships early cultures had with their environments. The myths simply serve as a metaphorical method of analyzing their situation.
Once the balance has been upset specific action will need to be taken to restore the previous balance or create a new one. Often, in nature, the original balance cannot be restored but merely mitigated and maintained. For instance, when the Olympians did not inform Demeter of her daughter’s disappearance she refused their company until it Persephone became goddess of the spring (Ham). Repeatedly, people tried to lock Dionysus away yet, the ropes would “not hold together, just as, the jail “doors unbarred themselves” (HAM).
