Prompt: In the cult classic film The Godfather: Part II (1974), Al Pacino, playing character Michael Corleone, shared words of wisdom: “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.” Describe a time in which you had to work closely with an “enemy” – whether that be a person, concept, or inanimate object – and how you handled the situation.

Response:
Junior year was a formidable foe. My course load was more rigorous than it had ever been. I had to stay up to ungodly hours every night to finish all my assigned homework and responsibilities. In addition, I am extremely involved with extracurricular activities. I barely had time to eat, and I rarely spent time with family. When I did have downtime, it was spent attempting to get ahead in

Although my strong suits lie in the liberal arts, I am still proficient in math. My junior year math grades were not reflective of that. Before last year, I had never ever received below a B on any progress report or report card. I remember being absolutely horrified whenever I’d check my grade. The most frustrating aspect of it all was that I understood the concepts. I could answer my teacher’s questions in class and follow along easily. Yet when it came time to take tests and quizzes, I could not focus long enough to do well because of how mentally exhausted I was. My saving grace was that I was meticulous about completing every homework assignment. After the first few weeks of barely scraping by, I realized I had to divert my attention from other areas in my life. I ended up choosing not to participate in my schools musical, an event I looked forward to every year. I started spending many long grueling hours after school with my math teacher remediating my tests and going over my mistakes. I managed to score a B+ on my mid-year and final exams. Eventually, I brought my final math grade up to a C+. A grade that would’ve once mortified me brought me a strong sense of accomplishment and

(CHALLENGE) I really started to struggle keeping my homework in line. I was used to having so much time to organize and complete my work; but now, I had basketball practices and games after school that consumed most of my time. A lot of nights I would have mental breakdowns due to stress. My homework also became much more demanding; College Algebra got more challenging week by week, Honors English papers required more time, and U.S. History current events were due every class period. My grades started to slowly slop downward.…

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

In the Spring of last year, it was my Junior year, one of the most critical years in high school. It’s the year that colleges look at the most, also it was the year that I was in some of the most challenging classes. Mostly honors, a lot of homework, and tests to go along with it. Studying would take me until late at night, and even on weekends, all day long. When it’s the end of the term everyone checks their grades for their report cards, and progress reports.…

In addition, out of all the classes I took I struggled the most with AP Chemistry. The material is pretty difficult to understand, even after spending a couple hours to review my notes some things would still be a little blurry. I was failing my test.…

“Stick to flute” is something I’ve heard from a few people while I was trying new things. Mr. Briem, one of the band teachers, took this the opposite direction and started me on a path to unknowingly end up like him. He encouraged me to explore music; that encouragement drove me in my first three years of high school to develop my musical skills. Briem introduced me to the potential I had for growing musically. He saw something in me that no one else did, and I didn't know at the time, but I’d later draw inspiration from that in a different setting.…

Any lover of film will almost invariably link this quote by Don Corleone to The Godfather (1972). Even an eight-year-old me could identify the name of the film, even though I had not yet been able to enjoy the masterpiece. I vaguely knew what the film was about: violence, crime, something about family and business, and mafioso culture. However, apart from the most iconic scenes, I probably would not have been able to watch a clip and decisively state, “Oh, I know this movie—isn’t it like called The Godfather or something, right?”…
