We’re persuaded to like Vito Corleone because of how much he loves his family. Vito’s son Sonni is set up by Carlo and assassinated by Barzini’s men. Although the loss of his son was hard on Vito. He was still able to calmly assess the situation, and understand that vengeance was not the answer. He made the decision not because he didn’t love Sonny enough to avenge him, but because vengeance would begin a war, and Vito couldn’t risk losing another member of his family. His ability to think through all the consequences of his actions, and calmy find the greatest solution for his family, so soon after the loss of his son, shows how strong and loving Vito is. Another reminder of how much Vito loves his family is when he returns home from the hospital after his attempted assassination. He has his entire extended family over at the house, and each of his grandkids give him a letter and tell him that they love him.
