With a few months left in the school year preparation for the move from middle school to high school brought a wave of meeting, presentations, and paperwork that served to prepare and enroll us in school the following August. Part of the process was picking out classes. This was the highlight of the experience as it was now in our hands what we wanted to learn. Filled from classrooms to the auditorium where guidance consolers and current high school students sat in front of the almost 400 students eagerly awaiting the information they were going to unload onto us. This however isn’t focus of this paper, but rather the presentation that preceded the general information session. The second presentation was optional; it wasn’t something every needed to hear but an interest meeting for students who wanted to find out more about the AVID program at the high school. I chose to stay behind not because I wanted information, but because I didn’t want to go back to class. The meeting explained the goals and structure of the program. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, it’s a college prep course aimed at student who are on their way to becoming the first in their families to attend college. I don’t think much of the presentation and head back to class. It wasn’t for a couple of weeks when my civics teacher pulled me out of class to go talk in private.
