The goal of Boys & Girls Clubs is: “to provide a world-class Club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who walks through our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school, on time, with a plan for the future.” As a Club staff with little weight behind me to support this goal, it makes me a stone’s throw away from being labeled a hypocrite when I almost didn’t graduate from high school, let alone have a plan for the future.
My childhood wasn’t glamorous enough to brag about, nor was it full of grief-stricken struggles that would warrant a tug at any heartstrings. It was simple. I grew up with both of my parents and my brother who was 4 years my senior. We didn’t have much to spend on extravagances, but in retrospect, I wouldn’t have known that because my parents gave me everything I needed and sometimes, when I deserved it, even things that I didn’t need.
I floated through elementary and middle school with high academic marks, not missing a single semester of making honor roll. It wasn’t until high school when lack of interest and effort began affecting my grades. My performance in school was less than ideal; at this time in my life I was too distracted with working multiple jobs to support my shopping and car hobbies and the never-ending extracurricular activities with my friends. My father has since passed away, I’m married with 3 daughters – one of which is a junior in high school currently scouting colleges she’d like to attend, and I’m a Branch Director at the Boys & Girls Clubs. Knowing what I know now, I’d like to think that if I knew about the Club when I was in high school, I wouldn’t be writing an essay like this. But after some thought, I don’t think a Club would have swayed me to quit some of my jobs, or pass on the many opportunities to go out with my friends. School was easy for me…when I applied myself.
