Multiculturalism, defined by the Merriam-Webster as the inclusion of many cultures in a society were all cultures identities are reflected is a term that has become widely known nowadays. This term centers on the thought of how a society should respond to cultural and religious differences. It’s important to clarify that the definition multiculturalism does not include complete assimilation and integration, which causes various problems within groups in society. Many citizens from society debate over whether if multiculturalism is the proper way to deal with diversity, especially nowadays, with the expansion of globalization, multiculturalism is being challenge.

An aspect I found interesting was how some theorist have worried that “multiculturalism can lead to a competition between cultural groups all vying for recognition and that this will further reinforce the dominance of the dominant culture” (Eagan, Multiculturalism). Minority cultural groups often tear each other down which causes them to stay in the position they are in society and it makes it possible for the dominant group to stay on top of the other cultures. Like everything, multiculturalism has some critics and some believe that by having a variety of different cultures in one society, the host nation culture will become eliminated. Assimilation, define as the act of conforming with your new environment, can a be a difficult topic to discuss because while people want to maintain their diversity and the aspects of what makes their culture unique, other citizens, most of the time the dominant group, may put pressure for them to assimilate to the environment that surrounds them and leave behind their culture. Some times if a minority group decides not to assimilate, it can cause some problems with the dominant group of society. The reason behind that is that some citizens see multiculturalism as a threat instead of something normal and this vision of seeing multiculturalism as a threat can cause conflicts between ethic or religious groups. Canada is one country that is often depicted as a progressive and an inclusive society, and many of Canadians said that it’s because they were taught since little kids about privilege regarding race, gender, religion, disability, etc. Multiculturalism in Canada has brought a deep union between their diverse population since the population are encourage to integrate to the Canadian culture and has also benefited their economic growth as a country.
In conclusion, my view on multiculturalism through the course was seen as something that was good for a country, because it created an understanding between people of different culture. However, as I started to dive more into the topic of multiculturalism I understood how we still need to teak little details for multiculturalism to work perfectly. We as citizens should be able to know what we should preserve from each culture. Not all aspects of a culture are good and to create a society where all cultures believe gender equality must be our main goal.
