Perspective essay In the book The Glass Menagerie, each figurine of glass symbolizes the life of one of the characters. When glass is first examined, it comes off as ordinary and boring, but when it is shown in the perfect light, it has a change to reflect a rainbow of colors, so do both Tom and Laura. Each character is different, and uniquely sculpted, not to mention delicate and authentic. The glass Menagerie Is both fragile and priceless,like family, representing how special sand irreplaceable each member is. In the play, Tom first comes off as a common glass figurine, with no special features or skills. He is shown to pay little attention to his family and care more deeply of himself. Him in his mom would get into heated arguments about the effort he is putting forward. “We have to do all that we can to build ourselves up. In these trying times we live in, all that we have to cling to is - each other. . . . That's why it's so important to - Tom,!” (Williams 31). She is very delicate and fragile like glass, and is easily broken. When she was in the living room with Tom and Amanda, Tom accidentally bumped into her glass menagerie, leaving her heartbroken, “ my glass!-menagerie… [she covers her face and turns away]”(Williams 24). Laura gets shattered over misfortunate events, unable to recover fully. In the play one of Laura's favorite glass Menagerie was the unicorn.
