The Glass Menagerie Mother

The more someone thinks they are different from another person, the more they realize how similar they are to them. The glass menagerie by Tennessee Williams has many memorable characters in it, the mother in the play is one of these memorable characters. Firstly, the mother (Amanda) has a unique role in the play as she is the attention seeker and controlling, she is always very loud and loves to be heard. The mother is not the only attention seeker though, the son Tom is an attention seeker as well. Tom acts the same way his mother does in seeking attention, another thing they share in common both share an explosive personality. This can be seen by the way Amanda always talks about how she lived in blue mountain and was so rich and didn’t have to worry about money, this can be seen in the following “LAURA: Yes. But let her tell it.TOM: Again? LAURA: She loves to tell it. AMANDA: One Sunday afternoon in Blue Mountain, your mother received seventeen! Gentlemen callers! Why, sometimes there weren't chairs enough to accommodate them all. We had to send the nigger over to bring in folding chairs from the parish house.” (tennesse 1.10-15). This scene shows how Amanda consistently tells this story about her being in blue mountain, this shows that she wants to escape her current situation and go back to the way she use to live back in blue mountain. Additionally, Tom also shows that he wants to escape reality as well by going to the movies all night to try and forget his current life and escape reality. The way tom seeks to excape railty can be seen in this passage “LAURA: Where have you been all this time? TOM: I have been to the movies. LAURA: All this time at the movies?”(tennesse 3. 68-70). The movies was big back in the day lots of people went to the movies during the time of the play and this connection that Tom had with the movies let him forget for a little bit about him hating his job and having to support his
