Tom is the man of the house since his father left he is the only one with a job and the family one hundred percent relies on him for the income and to pay any bill. He wants to leave and go travel somewhere else and have more of an adventurous life. He loves to write poetry and later will get fired from the warehouse because he writes on a shoe box.

She feels sorry for herself for being crippled and she is too shy to do any good. She is so shy and scared that she drops out of business school. She doesn’t think she is normal because of her limp but no one would really notice she makes a bigger deal out of it than it really is. Her mother tries to control her life but Laura and her mother, Amanda, want very different things out of life. Laura is always in the middle of Tom and Amanda’s fights and she never likes it when they argue. Laura doesn’t really have friends but she does have her prized possession small glass figures. Her favorite one is a unicorn that her crush on Jim O’Connor accidently breaks while they were listing to her favorite record. She meets Jim in High school but she never really talked to him much. She meets him again when Tom invites him over to meet Laura. Unfortunately he has a fiancé that Tom did not know about. Laura finds out after Jim kisses her because he apologizes says it was just in the moment and then tells her that he has a serious girlfriend and rushes to leave. Laura gives Jim the broken unicorn as a souvenir before he leaves and she jokes about how it now is just an ordinary horse. Laura is devastated after Jim leaves but finally is more open and feels less pity for
