The Glass Menagerie Courage

There are many ways that others expect people to be. Many believe that a woman needs a man to be happy. Laura’s mother believes she needs a man to take care of herself. That ends up making Laura feeling insecure. Laura has this glass unicorn that makes her feel special and it is extremely important to the story. People believe one needs to be and act a certain way to be normal. It should not matter what if a women has a man or not. Many believe one needs a man to be protected. In The Glass Menagerie Laura’s mom believes that Laura needs a man to protect herself. Amanda, Laura’s mom, always tells Tom to get Laura a gentleman caller. “I remember suggesting that it would be nice for your sister if you brought home some nice young man from the warehouse. I think that I’ve made that suggestion more than once” (Williams 72). When Amanda had first asked Tom to bring a gentleman caller he got mad that she would ask him that. …show more content…
She feels she cannot do anything without a man. It makes her feel disabled like she cannot do anything herself. While Amanda and Laura are talking Amanda asks if she has ever liked anyone. Laura tells her about Jim, but Jim only remembers her because of her disease. “I’m crippled!” (Williams 44). Laura feels that she is extremely loud because of her crippled leg as she walks into the classroom. Many have certain objects that mean a lot to them. In the book The Glass Menagerie Laura has a special glass unicorn. The unicorn makes her feel good about herself. It makes her be able to let everything and make her comfortable about herself being different.The unicorn is different from all the other glass horses she has. “The horn was removed to make him feel less freakish! Now he will feel more at home with the other horses, the ones that don’t have horns” (Williams 125). Laura is hurt that the unicorn is broken, but she is happy because the unicorn does not feel unusual
