In the beginning of the play it discusses the dreams of each character and what they yearned for to happen. Amanda (Mother) dreamed that her only daughter would find a husband and get out into the world and meet a gentleman the way she did in the past. Amanda tries to live through her daughter, Laura because when the mother was younger she had numerous gentleman callers and she wishes the same for Laura. Although, I believe the only reason she dreams this is because she wishes this man her daughter meets will also take care of her as well. On the other hand, Laura (Sister) did not lust over the idea of finding a guy, Laura was fine sitting around each day playing with her glass figurines because they were fragile just like herself. The glass figurines were Laura’s company, she did not need anyone else except for her menagerie. Then there was Tom (Narrator and Brother) he just wanted to escape it all. Escape the life he was forced into by his mother because of their deadbeat father walking out on them years ago. Tom dreamed one day he could leave and travel the world to become a poet maybe, but he knew this could not happen if he stayed in the same circumstances he is in now. The dreams and hopes this family obtains further pushes them away from one
