Characters Amanda Wingfield(Mother) While she doesn’t intentionally mean to hurt her children, she does with her sense of not being able to come to terms with reality. She very clearly lives in a fantasy life that correlates to her past. When the gentleman caller comes over, she wears an over the top dress that was from her cotillion for a simple dinner. Throughout the entire play, you can see just how low her self-esteem is. She has bad social anxiety that led to her not even being able to complete high school or the business class. Her class collection is a representation of her, specifically the unicorn. After Jim accidently broke it, in a way of not making Jim feel bad by saying “Now it is just like all the other horses.” After speaking with Jim, he points out how she’s not all that different from the rest of the …show more content…
The horizontal elements help tell the story because it allows us to see character development, more specifically in Tom & Laura.

I think it’s incredibly interesting how you interpreted the breaking of Laura’s glass menagerie. I interpreted differently; I saw it as this was Laura finally “breaking” out of her shell when Jim explains how her disability doesn’t make her different from the rest of the world. I also completely agree on the significance of the characters. They each have such distinct personality traits that I think completely make the story. from Discussion #1 - The Glass Menagerie

I think your theme of escaping is spot on. To add on to it, I think the theme shows through Laura & their mother as well. Laura escapes through her Glass Menagerie collection & Amanda escapes by continuing to live in some fantasy that is her past. I also agree with how Tom can’t escape the memories, Laura
