The glass Menagerie
The Glass Menagerie is a play written by Tennessee Williams. Not only is this a play but also a book. Tennessee said he had known the four actors for a long time and that he never thought he would see them before his own eyes on stage. The play is based on a Caucasian family that is trying to please one another. In the play a lot of emotions and life problems are taking place with each character. The mom plays a big part of the events that are happening. The son is the narrator of this play. The son is narrating the play because he is telling how he feels about what is going on in his life and what is taking place in his home. Also how he had to be the one to step up and be the man of the house. Although there are many things that is happening such as themes and symbolism, I noticed one that I felt as if played a big part. That theme was abandonment. Each character in the story either was abandon or played a part of the abandonment.
In the paly abandonment was shown through every single character. Abandonment means feeling as if no one wants you or is paying attention. This all started when the father of Laura and Tom, and the husband of their mother left them. This particular abandonment is called Physical abandonment. At the end of the play he left them to be on their own. He told his little sister to blow out the candle. That let him knew that he was free to go on by his life (Smith, William Jay). Also saying you are free. You don’t have to watch after me anymore. This was the start of a new life for the daughter and the mother. They had to re-adapt to being without a man figure being in their life. The mom and sister didn’t want to keep holding on to him and he wasn’t happy. The sister was the first one to notice it.
